Program Note:
Written for the HKPhil Composers Workshop - “Beyond the Ring,” Wagneresque for large orchestra (2018) is a homage to Richard Wagner and his epic Ring Cycle. This rather short, yet multi-sectional dynamic orchestral piece explores several iconic leitmotivs, such as the “Curse,” “Ring,” “Tarnhelm,” “Thunder,” and “Rhein” from the Ring Cycle, and the many ways in which these motives could be expressed in a more contemporary musical language. This musical experiment is also interweaved with another important source of inspiration. As a fan of J.R.R. Tolkein and the Lord of the Rings, I also drew influences from the fictional city, Minas Tirith, the City of Kings, one of the key ‘themes’ in the Third Age of Tolkein’s Middle Earth.
